Mountain Activities

Those that love the mountains cannot be apart from them for long. Certainly the attractions are endless both in winter and in summer. The sense of grandeur and space with those breathtaking views of lush green valleys, black rocky cliffs, brilliant white peaks and clear blue skies are all unforgettable. Combine this with your favourite pastime whether it be climbing, mountainbiking, river rafting or sitting reading a book with a picnic and you are in paradise.

Mountaineering - There are some excellent local peaks including the Rissiou (2622m), the Etendard (3464m) and Belledonne (2926m). Slightly further afield (1 hour) the Parc des Ecrins offers some famous mountains such as the Meije (3982m) and the Ecrin (4102m) and the climbing centres of La Grave and La Berarde are well worth a visit. There is a cosy mountain hut locally at 2300m and a whole series of strategically placed huts in Parc des Ecrins. You are advised to take a mountain guide with you.

Via Ferrata

Ice Climbing - A popular activity for hard-core climbers and best attempted in mid-winter. There are many possibilities in the vacinity not least of which is Vaujany's very own Cascade de La Fare. Others include the ice climbs near to the Chalet du Lac Besson at Alpe d'Huez and those in The Valon de La Selle above St Christophe. You are advised of course to employ the services of a mountain guide.

Glacial Walks - There is a special joy in crossing a snowy glacier in the middle of summer...listening to the crunch of your crampons and breathing the cool crisp air. The nearby Parc des Ecrins offers a wealth of itineraries which take in lush green valleys rising up to cold grey glaciers and snowy cols or rocky peaks. La Berarde and La Grave are the main mountaineering centres in the area and both offer Bureaux des Guides.

Via Ferrata - Be at one with the mountain in complete security, whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber. Discover the Via Ferrata in their magnificent settings.

Via Ferratas are protected rocky scrambling routes. Thanks to the ladders, ramps and cables fixed to the rock face, you do not have to be an experienced climber to find yourself perched on a rock face.

The sport requires special equipment, but those who enjoy thrills in total safety, can go independently or accompanied by a pro.

The Via Ferrata sites are the following:

Les Gorges de Sarenne. Location: Alpe d’Huez (1860-3330m). Approx. length: 1½ hours. Height gain: 250m. Max. altitude: 1885m

Pierre ronde. Location: Alpe d’Huez (1860-3330m). Approx. length: 1½ hours.
Height gain: 250m. Max. altitude: 1885m

There is also a good Via Ferrata at St Christophe in the Veneon (about half an hours drive away) and another excellent one at Le Casset about an hour away and near Serre Chevalier.
